University of Rochester Research & Research Education Associate Director in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Research and Research Education (RRE) Associate Director is a vital leadership role in developing and supporting divisional strategic priorities that align to the University of Rochester Medical Center's Office of Equity and Inclusion goals and strategic priorities to build an equitable, diverse, and inclusive learning and work environment for students, staff, faculty, and researchers.

Leads and designs RRE DEI culture initiatives, projects, and policies and procedures that are aligned with URMC goals. This position collaborates with RRE leadership to develop, implement, and assess strategies, lead systems initiatives, develop processes that align competing priorities across research, clinical, and/or academic domains, and optimize efficacy and impact of strategic opportunities. Identifies, evaluates, and implements solutions for key functional priorities while benchmarking external methodologies current and future trends, and creative solutions towards desired outcomes and goals for recruitment and retention of communities that are underrepresented in science. Researches, writes, and submits grants in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and department representatives that support related pipeline programs. Maintains relationships with external partners and internal stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning and Operations

  • Oversees and provides research and research education leadership in the development and implementation of integrated operational and administrative programs, structures, system, and policies across URMC Office of Equity and Inclusion Research and Research Education domain

  • Develops and translates department metrics, research, and trends into long and short-term operational strategy and analyze measures to lead critical systems initiatives and develop processes that align competing priorities and opportunities.

  • Advances innovative strategies to address systemic barriers within research and research education for underrepresented students, faculty, and staff through research, policy review and revisions, outreach, and internal and external relationships.

  • Leads intentional integration of equity and inclusion practices and global strategies into all aspects of department/division operations and programming.

  • Collaborates with key internal offices and stakeholder groups at various levels in the organization on policies, guiding principles, education, training, professional development, recruitment, and retention.

  • Develops and controls operating budgets for research and research education equity and inclusion efforts.

Culture and Climate

  • Provides research and research education constituents with inclusive leadership in promoting the creation of an inclusive climate and engagement that is founded on principles of anti-racism and that supports, respects, and values differing perspectives and experiences.

  • Ensures all members of the research community, especially graduate students, postdocs and other learners, experience a professional and nurturing environment where they are able to thrive and reach their full potential.

  • Builds restorative practice and social justice infrastructure to collaborate with research departments, research areas and graduate programs on specific needs related to interventions and restorative practices during and after incidents.

  • Serves as a resource providing advisement, mentoring, and support, and crisis response efforts for research pipeline program participants, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty.

  • Develops a comprehensive strategy for building, managing and supporting affinity groups and programs, with the explicit goal of increasing engagement across underrepresented populations within the SMD and URMC community

Recruitment and Pipeline Programs

  • Provides recommendations for and evaluation of SMD research recruitment efforts for graduate pipeline programs, graduate programs (PhD, Master’s Advanced Certificate), postdoctoral scholars, and faculty in relation to SMD and University equity and inclusion goals and priorities

  • Researches, writes, and submits grants in collaboration with URMC and department representatives, in support of the office, including identification and dissemination of funding opportunities, assistance with grant preparation, setting program policies and objectives, oversight of regulatory and compliance issues, and ensuring the efficient and effective operation with URMC OEI.

  • Serves as a department/division representative in the local community targeted toward populations underrepresented in science. Builds partnerships with relevant organizations working with diverse populations at the University, in the Rochester community, nationally and globally

Training and Development

  • In collaboration with Culturally Responsible Management and Learning and Development, develops a comprehensive strategy for building and managing a department/division-wide training and development program for faculty, learners, and staff.

  • In collaboration with The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), develops a comprehensive strategy to identify and support incoming pipeline and graduate students who are not fully prepared, or who do not feel fully prepared, to be successful in graduate school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • 5 years of relevant experience required;

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • 3 years of experience in Diversity, Equity and Cultural Competence leadership preferred.;

  • Experience in the healthcare industry or higher education preferred;

  • 2+ years of experience in a managerial capacity preferred.

  • Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to influence across a highly matrixed organization while using a collaborative mindset required.

  • Outstanding presentation and excellent communication skills (oral and written) to engage a diverse range of colleagues, from peers to senior executives required.

  • Demonstrated understanding of leading practices regarding DEI/RJ and service to underrepresented populations required.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to develop insights, drive decisions and measure impact including communicating complex information with clarity to diverse audiences required.

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with keen attention to detail required.

  • Experience with computer technologies and advanced software applications required.

  • Occasional travel; evening and weekend work.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $68,765 - $103,147 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
