Position Overview

The Manager, Information Technology, provides management of manufacturing and laboratory automation systems, instruments in support of Allergan’s Supply Chain operations. The person in this role will work closely with scientists, and the IT organization to support the manufacturing and Laboratory Informatics services, including systems such as SCADA, ELN, LIMS, CDS, lab automation, inventory, compound management, EH&S, Data Management and Archival (SDMS) systems. This role includes a hands-on technical component to build, deploy, manage and support manufacturing and laboratory software, and instrument interfaces.

Key Duties

  • Partner with Client Services, Business Leaders, and multiple IT organizations to lead and develop solution strategies for the lab platforms utilizing standardized Enterprise Architect and Six Sigma methodologies and tools

  • Align solution strategies to the enterprise, platform, and business architecture roadmaps to ensure business capabilities are achieved.

  • Simplify and lower the cost of ownership of the laboratory environment by reducing redundant applications and integrating technologies leveraging established platforms and technologies. Responsibilities

  • Partner with scientists and scientific leadership to assess lab and manufacturing informatics needs, including instrument software and interfaces, lab automation and informatics data management.

  • Support manufacturing and laboratory informatics services within the framework of defined IT operating principles and in close coordination with IT Operations and End User Support services.

  • Provide direct hands on support and administration of various software platforms that support manufacturing and laboratory personnel including, but not limited to:


  • Electronic Lab Notebooks

  • Sample Management

  • Chemical Inventory

  • Chromatographic Data Systems

  • Spectroscopic Data Systems

  • Laboratory Robotics

  • Instrument Data Analysis

  • Data Management and Archival

  • Environmental Health and Safety

  • Manage all non-desktop related IT support request/issues site-wide and coordinate day to day activities of a single contract resource providing laboratory IT support.

  • Work with internal stakeholders and external vendors to improve lab and research operations and data analysis by assisting subject matter experts with the selection, implementation, and support of software systems used by Ironwood researchers.

  • Manage IT projects that deliver new and improved lab and research informatics capabilities at Ironwood, leading a team of cross functional stakeholders and managing vendor activities as necessary.

  • Proactively partner with internal stakeholders across Quality labs to understand needs and provide excellent IT support of computerized systems supporting research activities;

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors providing software, service, and support of laboratory information systems;

  • Working with Quality Assurance, use risk-based approaches to assess compliance impacts and build computer systems validation activities into system implementation and change control activities where necessary;

  • Develop and maintain system documentation for supported applications, including change control and validation documentation where required.


  • Experience in biotech, pharma or life sciences a must;

  • 5-7 years’ experience working in an IT organization supporting a Pharmaceutical research environment, including support of manufacturing and laboratory IT systems;

  • Hands on experience with typical manufacturing and laboratory software systems (LIMS, ELN, CDS, Inventory, etc.);

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills –within IT as well as with scientists;

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize among competing demands;

  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently within the framework of the IT and cross-functional scientific organization.

  • Experience in vendor management and contract negotiation;

  • Exposure to computer systems validation and instrument qualification in a laboratory setting desirable. Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, science, or business.
