Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The main responsibilities of this position are to assist the Principal Investigator of the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE) and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, first on various research projects and second on training students in the laboratory. He/she will work with the PI to generate and analyze research data, and to assist in manuscript and grant proposal preparations. Also, he/she will be required to perform some other duties such as outreach activity and equipment maintenance assigned by the BRITE Director and Department Chair.

The missions of BRITE are applied research and workforce development. Its research focuses are drug discovery and health-related research in areas such as neuroscience, cancer, antimicrobials, cardiometabolic disease, infectious diseases, lung disease, and plant genetic engineering. Through the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BRITE offers programs at the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels and provides students with scientific competency and laboratory experience to work in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, or to fully prepare them to pursue advanced studies.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to student training initiatives and research projects in BRITE as assigned by their assigned faculty supervisor. This role combines the duties of research scientist with the training of undergraduate and graduate students in research activities.

The candidate will contribute to mentoring activities for undergraduate students in a two-semester special topics laboratory module research course, and graduate students conducting research for their thesis projects, as planned by their faculty advisors, perform experiments, collect data, maintain equipment, and contribute to the organization of seminars and workshops for the institute and department. They will be expected to provide guidance on experimental techniques, help students troubleshoot experimental issues, train in laboratory safety protocols, data analysis methods, and assist students in the preparation of their presentations and to communicate their findings in oral or poster sessions. This position reports to a faculty member.

The main responsibilities of this position are to assist the Principal Investigator of the BRITE Institute and Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, on educating and training undergraduate and graduate students on the synthesis of biologically active molecules. He/she will maintain, train and assist students/researchers on using a 500 MHz NMR, LCMS, GCMS and Isco Combiflash Purification System instruments. He/she will also work with the PI on drug discovery and natural products synthesis research projects and assist in manuscript and grant proposal preparations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates must have a background in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences with experience in organic synthesis and synthesizing biologically active molecules. An understanding of treating and administering drugs to patients is desired but not required. Experience in using analytical instrumentation such as a 500 MHz NMR, HPLC, LCMS and an Isco Combiflash Purification System is also desired. Emphasis is on proficiency in chemical synthesis, drug discovery and good oral and written communication skills in English.

Minimum Education/Experience

A PhD degree with a minimum of two years or a MS/BS degree with a minimum of three years of work experience is required.
