Position Overview

The Director, Information Technology (R&D) position based in Irvine, CA will lead the innovation and collaboration across R&D for Big Data Platforms and related technology, liaising with and sharing initiatives and strategy across other Allergan divisions and industry. This position will help transform existing data silos and isolated information sources into a mechanism for searchable, data-driven insights and machine learning capabilities to guide the drug development process.

Main Areas of Responsibilities

  • Author and drive a vision for aggregation of scientific data: structured, unstructured, multi-channel; in house and subscription; operational, laboratory, IoT; EMR and RWE.

  • Align with leaders to understand business problems, develop the strategic design of new data solutions across multiple environments and business groups selecting a combination of technologies fit for purpose.

  • Document vision into a roadmap; targets critical success factors and authors execution plans; ensures the implementation and use of best software development practices.

  • Direct the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to drive analysis across platforms.

  • Advance big data initiatives by providing consultancy to different technology and business groups including executive leadership.

  • Manage relationships with IT colleagues and R&D business leadership and subject matter experts.

  • Maintain a currency of knowledge in data analytics capabilities and industry trends, researching as needed

  • Promote self-service analytic usage capabilities, mature out data literacy and governance.


The following listed requirements need to be met at a minimum level to be considered for the job:

  • 10+ years information science experience, or an equivalent combination of education and related big data experience.

  • 5+ years of experience working with emerging data and analytics technologies.

  • 5+ years in a lead and/or leadership role.

Preferred Skills/Qualification

  • Must have a demonstrated track record in scoping, deploying and maintaining big data solutions and their associated technology.

  • Background in data architecture, analytics or data science.

  • Clear expertise and experience building out big data and machine learning platforms either in house or as part of a commercial offering in cloud environments (Azure, AWS a plus).

  • Demonstrated data science or programming experience in COTS or open source analytic tools and distributed computing technologies.

  • Subject Matter Expertise in machine learning algorithms.

  • Currency in the emerging set of big data tools and knowledge of how they interact, the best tool for the best outcome and where the technologies are growing.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present solutions to executive level clients and management.

  • Requirements gathering and SDLC background.

  • Leadership, supervision, team building, and training practices and methods.

  • Financial management experience a plus.

  • Drug development experience a plus.

  • GxP system implementation experience a plus.


  • BA/BS degree is required; advanced degree, MBA, is preferred.
