The Executive Director – R&D will be based in Irvine, CA. Reporting to the VP of R&D, the Executive Director is responsible for leading the Product Development (Formulation and Scale-up/Tech Transfer), External Scientific Innovation (Open Science) and Portfolio Management functions of the SkinMedica R&D team. Also,
Theindividual will drive and manage all of SkinMedica’s Product Developmentefforts, which cover a wide variety of topical skin care products,including both OTC and cosmetic treatments – leading a team of chemists,engineers and technicians in the creation and scale-up of novel formulationsto complement the SkinMedica product portfolio, as well as in providingconsultation/guidance to the Operations & Global Pharm Tech team ontechnical issues on marketed products. This role will also providetechnical support to product inquiries and help strengthen SkinMedicascientific credibility by delivering presentations/workshops atPhysician/Advocate/ Aesthetic Expert Educational Summits and SalesTraining.
Theposition will also manage the External Innovation & Open Science effortsfor SkinMedica – proactively identifying partnership opportunities withexternal parties (suppliers, academic institutions, start-ups, othermanufacturers, etc.) and potential assets for licensing/acquisition, aswell as serving as the primary technical liaison between Allergan andthese alliance partners. This individual will serve as SkinMedica’s pointperson in tracking current assets/opportunities under consideration andwill chair the External Innovation Steering Committee (EISC) – a governanceforum with participants from Marketing, Business Development &Commercial Assessment for determining which opportunities to pursue andfor coordinating necessary due-diligence activities.
Theindividual will also be responsible for the Portfolio Management function withinSkinMedica – leading the creation, implementation and ongoing operationsof a SkinMedica Governance Structure (for both New and Marketed Products)and of a Stage Gate Process that is modeled after Growth Product Flow. Inaddition, this position will also share leadership with Upstream Marketingin identifying emerging trends/technologies in the skin care industry and organizingperiodic Innovation/Ideation Workshops to ensure a steady flow of newproduct pipeline ideas. The individual will also provide technical andstrategic input to the Governance Structure with regard to productlifecycle decisions.
Main Areas of Responsibilities
Guides and supervisesthe Product Development team on all R&D efforts (including FormulationDevelopment, Scale-up/Tech Transfer, etc.) to create new and novel products whichcomplement the SkinMedica product array. Provides technical support to productinquiries and helps strengthen SkinMedica scientific credibility by deliveringscientific presentations/workshops at Educational Summits and SalesTraining.
Managesthe External Innovation & Open Science efforts for SkinMedica – proactivelyidentifying external partnership/licensing/acquisition opportunities, servingas primary technical liaison between Allergan and alliance partners. Tracksassets/opportunities under consideration and chairs the cross-functional governanceforum (EISC) for determining which opportunities to pursue and coordinatingdue-diligence activities.
Leadsthe Portfolio Management function within SkinMedica – guiding theimplementation and ongoing operations of the SkinMedica Governance Structure andStage Gate Process; Co-leads with Upstream Marketing in identifying emergingtrends/technologies and organizing Innovation/Ideation Workshops to create newpipeline ideas. Provides input to the Governance Structure on product lifecycledecisions
The following listed requirements need to be met at a minimum level to be considered for the job:
Fifteen or more yearsof industry experience in the development of cosmetic and OTC topicalformulations – especially in the areas of skin and sun care.
Strong background inproduct formulation and a history of successful US and global product launches.
Experience in managing,mentoring and coaching a team of staff is required. Particularly, experience inmanaging a team of chemists/technicians in a R&D formulation laboratory ishighly desired.
Key relationships withmajor raw material and ingredient suppliers are critical.
Sound knowledge ofproduct quality and stability protocols is essential.
The below skills are attributes that may not be mandatory, but are definitely desired in the ideal candidate.
- Familiarity with scale-upand manufacturing, as well as with US and international ingredient/productregulations, is preferred.
- A Master’s degree or Ph.D. ispreferred.
