What Your New Manager Wants You To Know
The primary role of the Scientific Associate is to independently operate upstream equipment (Fermenters, microfluidizers, CIP skid etc.) and support fermentation process development at small scale for the Early Stage Process Development Group and for research support. This hands-on position is responsible for the daily operations, to support process development for upstream activities and to develop and implement new strategies and technologies to improve process monitoring and performance by applying scientific and/or engineering principles and practices. This position also requires hands on experience and knowledge of operation of fermenters, including glass and stainless-steel vessels, single use fermenter systems, CIP units, microfluidizers and clarification processes. Additional responsibilities include data analysis, troubleshooting process and equipment, participation in project teams, lab inventory and organization, maintaining detailed records of batches and experiments. This position also requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of an upstream team and supporting drug discovery and downstream teams as well as demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of position. A contributor with a focus on improving efficiency in equipment operations and a process improvement of novel processes would be preferred.
The position requires the individual to work with and in areas requiring select agent access (i.e. biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories). Therefore, the candidate must conduct all work activities in compliance with Allergan internal and applicable regulatory requirements. Allergan internal requirements include compliance with ethics, environmental health and safety, financial, human resources, and general business policies, requirements and objectives.

Independentlyoperate fermentation/upstream process equipment. Position requires proficientknowledge and hands on experience of operating stainless steel/glass/single-usefermenters and clarification equipment.
Conduct routine fermentation operations relating to fermenter prep:assembly/disassembly, P-test/SIP/CIP, in process sampling andmedia/buffer/reagent prep and able to troubleshoot operational and equipmentissues.
Must be willing to work with and handle potent neurotoxins andin-process samples that may contain toxin-expressing organisms. Ability to perform aseptic cell propagation andmanipulation under a biosafety laminar flow hood.
Followstudy protocols and execute experiments independently (or minimal supervision) atsmall scales and large scale.
Demonstrate technical competence in executing fermentation experimentsutilizing detailed knowledge of standard analytical techniques in fermentationprocess development and data analysis.
Identify, recommend and implement process and operational improvementsof upstream process while maintaining safe operations.
Authorand edit development batch records and associated standard operating procedures.Compile experimental batch records and documents/inventory for in-processsamples in the inventory system.
Haveadditional responsibilities are lab inventory and organization. Individual willevaluate lab equipment and procure the necessary supplies to ensure continualsuccessful lab operations.
Collaborateeffectively to achieve results as an individual as well as part of a teamenvironment.
Assistfermentation team in tech transfer for process developed at small scale toearly stage process development laboratory (internally or externally).
Completetraining consistent with safety, technical, operational, process, and otherskill/ knowledge requirements for the position. Maintain training currency.Support safety program and ensure safety in all routine and new operations bystrictly following SOPs.
BSin Biological Science, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Biochemical/ChemicalEngineering or a related Life Science field with 2+ years of relevantindustrial experience or MS with 0 to 2 years of related work experience. Anequivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Hands-onexperience in the operation of stainless-steel fermenter vessels operated via aSCADA is required.Experience withsingle use fermentation operations and equipment would be considered a plus.
Experiencewith cell lysis and early clarification methods using various membranemethodologies are required.
Demonstratedability to work independently as well as in team environment, multitask andensure flexibility in a dynamic environment. Skilledexperience in the application of scientific/engineering principles andtechniques relevant to development of fermentation processes.
