Los Alamos National Laboratory Rapid Prototype Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Get hands on with developing rapid prototypes for unique systems that support a variety of groups and the Los Alamos National Laboratory mission. The Automation, Robotics, and Controls group (E-3) within the Engineering Technology and Design division (E) is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, process control systems, machine control systems, robotics, and safety systems used across the lab. As a Rapid Prototype Engineering Technologist, you will support the design and fabrication of a variety of electronics, control racks, and mechanical systems from sketch to prototype to final product. In E-3, we pride ourselves on an open and collaborative work environment where we work in multidisciplinary teams to meet our goals. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

Engineering Technologist 1 ($83,900 - $136,600)

  • As an Engineering Technologist 1 your responsibilities would include:

  • Apply technical knowledge to rapidly generate prototypes from limited requirements.

  • Assist in instrumentation and control systems design, development, troubleshooting, and production.

  • Prepare, review, and document technical information.

  • Assist with fabrication of various parts including circuit boards, cables, and racks.

  • Generate and review electrical drawings for accuracy, completeness, and standardization.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($92,300 - $151,000)

  • In addition to what was outlined above, an Engineering Technologist 2 responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to improving the groups capabilities and workflow.

  • Contribute to the planning, coordination, and preparation of equipment or work specifications.

  • Apply knowledge of industrial control software (PLC programming).

  • Determine approach to solutions, plans, schedules and arrange own activities in accomplishing objectives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 1

  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques and design.

  • Basic knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Effective written and oral communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

  • Experience with the design and implementation of system hardware and software.

  • Working knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design.

  • Demonstrate appropriate initiative and decision making.

  • Ability to communicate and coordinate technical specifications and timelines.

  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum job requirements, candidates with expanded qualifications in any of the following areas are viewed favorably:

Software

Experience with AutoCAD Electrical

Experience with Rockwell Automation

Experience with SolidWorks

Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence)

Clearance Level

DOE Q Clearance preferred.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
