University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general direction, with considerable latitude to exercise independent judgment, the Staff Scientist will provide direct research support at the professional level to multiple health equity research projects using a community-based participatory research approach. Staff Scientist will engage in other models of community engagement. Participates and facilitates research team meetings; contributes to problem-solving, develops research reports; implements and recommends solutions, and tracks resolution. Must have the ability to deal effectively and professionally with a variety of persons ranging from external leaders of national organizations, senior faculty and other research staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Research Coordination

  • Contributes to writing of research proposals and prepares regulatory documentation.

  • Develops and modifies test and study methods; directs procedures for data collection and handling.

  • Prepares presentations and analytical reports to disseminate research findings to multiple audiences.

  • Drafts reports and manuscripts.

Roles in Community-based Participatory Research

  • Manages the schedules for testing and interviews, locates patients and controls, obtains consent, administers testing and conducts interviews.

  • Assures that protocols/instruments are designed for use with diverse populations including ASL and Spanish speaking study participants.

  • Keeps abreast of trends in the field by reading current research literature and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars, and research conferences.

  • Equipped to coordinate semi-structured interview, chart review, quality improvement projects and community-based participatory research.

Study coordination

  • Oversees subject recruitment and training for large nationally funded research studies, serves as a liaison with other funded sites, coordinates activities across sites nationally and locally developing detailed procedure manuals, and ensures protocol adherence and quality.

  • Keeps current with all federal, state, sponsor, and institutional policies, laws, SOPs, and guidelines. Demonstrates accountability for continuous learning by GCPs. Supports current industry standards, best practices, and trends in areas relevant to research studies to implement resulting study changes.

  • Develops, prepares, and submits study protocol revisions to the RSRB. Assesses adherence to protocols. Maintains competencies as described in the human subject protection and good clinical practice guidelines.

Data and Study Management

  • Analyzes and evaluates research data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program. Prepares written reports on all phases of work involved in research projects. Contributes to the design, interpretation, and final writing of research publications – thereby meeting co-authorship of publications.

  • Oversees input of data from multiple sites into study database, contributes to data management and data analysis.

  • Performs routine data quality assurance procedures and resolves discrepancies.

  • Prepares and organizes study records, meetings, and minutes.

Fiscal and Operations Management

  • Manages payment, tracking, and documentation of patient study incentives.

  • Oversees tracking and reporting of the ongoing activities of the different teams.

  • Supports administrative functions, including acting as liaison with department Research Administrative staff.

  • Analyzes and prepares funder reports. Develops and controls research projects budgets in consultation with Faculty. Is responsible for research project budget reports and records. Authorizes expenditures for expendable supplies and maintenance.

  • Reviews the department’s monthly responsibility summaries to ensure the department’s activities are aligned with priorities (short-term and long-term goals).

  • Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, and equipment.

  • Interviews, trains, develops, and evaluates staff. Directs initial training as well as continuous skill development of procedures and techniques. Counsels staff and advises them on research studies and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Doctoral degree with major course work in the field of assignment and 2 years of relevant postdoctoral training.

Preferred:

  • Fluency in Spanish language skills is required as part of this position.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks, organize and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Excellent personnel management and leadership ability.

  • Ability to write research reports.

  • Experience analyzing budgetary line items for compliance with budget guidelines.

  • Strong attention to detail, records management; and database management skills.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and/or community funding sources and mechanisms.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $18.10 - $25.35 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
