University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

To provide research support for projects in cancer stem cell biology (hematopoietic disorders) laboratory. The experimental results achieved from this position will be to determine the role of the microenvironment on benign and malignant hematopoietic stem cells. Techniques utilized include laboratory procedures such as reagent preparation, tissue culture, histology, molecular biology techniques (such as DNA extraction, PCR, cloning), fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometry, and animal husbandry. Prior lab experience is helpful, but not necessary. Knowledge of basic biology is required. This individual will remain current with the literature in regard to techniques employed and help establish new protocols, in addition to assisting in analyzing and summarizing results of studies. These experiments also will serve as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and future funding opportunities

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cell culture of primary bone marrow derived hematopoietic cells.

  • Perform assays involved in the functional characterization of normal and abnormal hematopoietic progenitors including: use of flow cytometry to monitor HSC and blood cell progenitors in vivo, bone marrow transplantation assays, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, tail and submandibular bleedings, etc.

  • Perform, troubleshoot and interpret cell cycle analysis as well as gene and protein expression analysis using qRT-PCR, Western Blot, and immunofluorescence.

  • Generate lentiviral vectors for shRNA delivery into mammalian primary cells and cell lines. This requires the individual to employ cloning techniques and site directed mutagenesis.

  • General laboratory responsibilities: Research literature to develop methods and resolution of technical problems in the evaluation of the appropriateness of techniques used in experimental protocols. Assist with general laboratory needs, including monitoring computer-based inventories and databases supply organization and maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred in Biology or related field.

Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language and work in a collaborative work environment. Required computer skills include MS Word, Excel, Photoshop, and statistical software. Candidate must be able to work with rodents.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 16.49 - $ 23.08 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
