POSITION SUMMARY:

To provide research support in the investigation of the hematopoietic stem cell microenvironment in normal and malignant (leukemic) settings, in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Becker in the James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute. These results will also serve as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and grant proposals. This individual will work independently, organize and troubleshoot experimental approaches to address scientific aims.

SUPERVISION:

This individual will report to Michael Becker, M.D., and requires that the individual be able to conduct, troubleshoot and redesign experiments as needed. Also requires that the individual can work within a team setting collaborating with students, fellows and other technicians. Techniques will include Flow Cytometry, Mouse Handling, PCR, qRTPCR, Tissue Culture and various molecular biology assays.

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY: (20%)

10% Enhance the molecular biology capabilities of the laboratory by independently performing research experiments utilizing complex molecular biology techniques including isolation of RNA and DNA, RT-PCR, and qRT-PCR, western blots, and ELISAs.

10% Analyze data and based on the results, make decisions regarding the experimental process in conjunction with the laboratory PI.

CELL BIOLOGY: (30%)

10% Design and implement polychromatic cell sorting and flow cytometry panels. Compensate and analyze flow cytometry data and perform flow cytometry analysis.

10% Prepare cells by staining for multi-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting.

10% Independently perform various cell cultures and manipulation of both primary mouse and human cells as well as mouse and human cell lines.

MOUSE HANDLING: (30%)

10% Responsible for designing animal studies as well as collection and analysis of mouse tissues for use in histological, flow cytometric and tissue culture assays.

10% Genotyping and maintenance of mouse strains.

10% Competitive repopulation assays involving bone marrow transplantation.

GENERAL LAB RESPONSIBILITIES: (20%)

5% Participate in regular lab meetings including presentation of results. Develop figures and write methodologies for results to be published. Retain familiarity with scientific and medical literature relating to laboratory projects.

• Data analysis.

• Assist in the oversight and utilization of various instrumentation and lab equipment.

• Participate in routine laboratory maintenance and organization.

REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with whole body irradiation, multispectral imaging flow cytometry, FACS, cytometry analysis software, and molecular biology techniques desired. Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language and work in a collaborative work environment. Candidate must be able to work with rodents.

Preferred Qualifications:

Computer skills including Prism Graph Pad, MS Word, Excel (required), Photoshop, PowerPoint, FlowJo, and statistical software. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be necessary.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 18.89 - $ 26.44 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
