University of Rochester Laboratory Technician IV in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Biro Lab at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences is seeking a full-time laboratory technician to maintain two newly established animal research colonies at the University of Rochester: a tropical fish lab and a homing pigeon loft. Duties will involve standard daily husbandry (feeding & watering of animals, upkeep of facilities), basic health monitoring of the animals, liaising with veterinary staff, weekly cleaning, ordering of supplies, maintenance of lab records, and the curation of data, permits, protocols, and other paperwork. The candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in behavioral experiments conducted with the animals, which will focus on the spatial problem-solving abilities of individual subjects as well as of groups (flocks/shoals).

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Animal husbandry (daily provision of food, water, and grit to pigeons; food and supplements to fish), juvenile care (chick ringing in pigeons, separation of hatchlings in fish), facility monitoring & upkeep (may involve small DIY tasks)

  • Animal health monitoring, animal welfare enhancement, liaising with veterinary staff, administering treatment or medications, annual vaccination of pigeons

  • Assisting researchers with experiments (equipment set-up and maintenance, collection and handling of subjects, deployment of biologgers, data downloads, transport of pigeons to release sites)

  • Ordering supplies, maintenance of lab records, archiving experimental data, curating permits, protocols, and other paperwork

  • Facility cleaning (fish room, pigeon loft)

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires Associate's degree in appropriate discipline or 1-2 years of experience in related field.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • Keeping and maintenance of tropical fish, bird handling preferred

  • Some experience with electronic databases/data curation preferred

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 15.38 - $ 24.52 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
