Position Overview

The Director, Medical Affairs - Toxin Science will be based in USA. The position will be a scientific and clinical subject matter expert role, building clinical expertise and providing education and training in toxin science internally and externally. He/she will develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with external customers focusing on policy and formulary decision makers, hospital institutions, academic centers, integrated health networks, government channels, and HCPs to provide comprehensive medical and scientific education and expertise for botulinum toxin products, within the assigned territory and globally. Additionally, he/she will provide subject matter expertise at an operational and strategic level across the Allergan organization.

Main Areas of Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop andmaintain professional relationships with HCPs, academic centers, and decisionmakers to provide access to current approved medical and scientific informationon botulinum toxin products across all therapeutic and aesthetic indications.

  • Consistent withregulatory guidelines, ensure medical accuracy and fair balance of informationto be disseminated, focusing on botulinum toxin science.

  • Provide support for the AllerganDirector of National Accounts team in US (and other commercial teams) indelivering clinical and pharmacy presentations and providing botulinum toxin scientificeducation and expertise for medical policy and formulary initiatives, and educationin a compliant manner.

  • In conjunction with the GlobalDirector of Toxin Science, conduct on-going global education to the MedicalAffairs function across therapeutic areas, as well as field sales, and otherinternal personnel as required. Ensure up to date knowledge of product use andcompetitor data, expected to be Allergan Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on toxinscience, health outcomes, and landscape developments.

  • Work closely with othergroups in Allergan (e.g., Payer MSLs, regional market access managers) toprovide high quality toxin science expertise on an as needed and requested basis.Will provide extra-territorial support as required.

  • In conjunction with theGlobal Director of Toxin Science, work closely with Global Evidence and Value(GEV) to develop global strategy and tactical approaches for generation ofrelevant health economic data related to botulinum toxin non-interchangeability.

  • In conjunction with theGlobal Director of Toxin Science, work closely with R&D functions duringplanning cycles to develop global strategies in support of botulinum toxin science,to include overall scientific messaging, preclinical landscape and datageneration, R&D botulinum toxin development opportunities.

  • Work with GEV team indevelopment of FDAMA tools to share health economic data with external UScustomers and similar development for ex-US external customers as appropriate.

  • Regularly performco-rides with other MSLs to ensure a broad external understanding of toxinscience.

  • Working with the Global Directorof Toxin Science, provide medical and scientific insights from the field andutilize insights to develop appropriate audience specific tools and materialsas required and requested, including working with scientific communicationsteams and others to develop appropriate, compliant materials and monitoringcompetitive environment, and appropriate literature.

  • Provide appropriate andapproved information and education for physicians, healthcare decision makersand ancillary healthcare professionals regarding current and future toxin therapies.

  • Facilitate proceduralaspects regarding on-strategy submission of IIT proposals from HCPs.

  • Work with the Payer MSLTeam in the US, including ensuring alignment on scientific positioning of Allerganbotulinum toxin products in an evolving and increasingly competitive landscape.

  • Mentor AssociateDirectors within the Toxin Science team to utilize scientific knowledge, behavioralskills, and KOL/HCDM engagement in support of botulinum toxin clinical educationand scientific aspects of toxin non-interchangeability.

  • Act as a recognizedsubject matter expert, internally and externally, provide innovate solutions tothe complex area of toxin science.

  • Responsible for maintainingannual expenses within assigned budget parameters.

  • Responsible for accurate andtimely documentation of above activities.



The following listed requirements need to be met at a minimum level to be considered for the job:

  • Ability to travel 70-80%, including local travel as well as extensive out of state with occasional international travel

  • Minimum 5 years total specific industry experience (pharma, device, etc.) and minimum 5 years post professional degree practice or relevant transferable experience (clinical practice, academic research, regulatory/scientific)

  • Experience and specialized expertise in botulinum toxin science is required

  • Previous experience in payer/tendering botulinum toxin engagements is required

  • Prior experience in a field-based scientific role (e.g. MSL role) preferred

  • Where relevant, a good understanding of Good Clinical Practices, ICH guidelines, PhRMA code, FDA CFR, ISO, clinical research ethics, HIPAA and patient privacy laws, EU Directive and other applicable local regulations


  • MD, Pharm. D or Ph. D orrelated doctorate level medical or life science related degree required
