Recruitment: The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 1 - Wicomico County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMT) position. This is an Interview and Hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

This announcement many also be used for future SHA vacancies throughout the state of Maryland.

Nature of Work: This is an entry level of repair and routine maintenance on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and construction/maintenance equipment. This position requires knowledge of basic principles of operation & construction of diesel and gas-powered engines; knowledge of proper use, care, and maintenance of various standard hand tools; knowledge of repair and service concepts, principles, testing devices, tools, meters, etc. involved in the repair and servicing of heavy road maintenance equipment. This position will also maintain records and prepare reports, carry out instructions, communicate, and work effectively with others. The HEMT Apprentice will learn to operate heavy equipment in order to perform test drives. Employees in this classification do not supervise, they will receive close supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or another designated supervisor.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None

Notes:

  1. Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  3. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.)

  4. Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

Selected candidate will need to obtain a Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.

Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.

Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.

Special Requirements:

  • Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours in order to maintain and repair equipment.

  • Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials.

  • On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

  • This is an essential position and employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or pager) at their own expense for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

  • Eligible applicants may be subject to background check which may have an impact on employment. A history of arrest or convictions is not an automatic disqualification to employment.

  • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
